I’m on Twitter
January 11, 2007
At first I didn’t understand what was going on with these social networks that tie into your text messaging capabilities of your cell phone. Having setup Twitter and hooked it into IM, I can understand it. I think of it as a global /away system (for those of you into irc). Here’s how it works through your cell: You text message what you are doing to 40404 and it updates Twitter. Everyone who is “following” you (added you as a friend) will get a text message update of what you’re doing. You can also setup Twitter with Instant messaging clients such as Google Talk and AOL Instant Messenger. You simply add the Twitter IM bot to your IM list, and then you can send updates to Twitter via IM.
Another cool thing about it, is that you can use it to update your friends on news. Recently, Twitter setup a Macworld “group” so that people who were at Macworld could give updates to the group. Macworld updates on your cell phone instantly
I’ve been getting tidbits about the new iPhone via Twitter now. It’s pretty nice.
So in summary, you have three methods for updating Twitter: Phone, IM, and Web. Some developers have also created Windows and Mac OS X clients to update Twitter as well. Get more info at the Twitter Wiki. It’s actually pretty neat once you get the hang of it. So check me out on Twitter to get updates on what I’m up to. I’ve also placed a “My status” section in the sidebar so you can see updates on bwana.org too.
